“Be not afraid. You need but to believe.”
So said our Lord, but how can we not fear?
The world still welters — wars without reprieve –
It breaks and burns – our death seems ever near.
How can we fearless be when swells the ocean
To crush our homes? Is this our punishment?
If we believe our Lord and His devotion,
God dwells in us, so we are confident.
There is no fear in love, which we averred
When claiming Jesus as God’s Son, the Way,
Who took our punishment; God’s steadfast Word
Laid down His life to drive out all dismay.
His love in us, we do as our Lord bade:
We trust His word; we will not be afraid.
NB: the first line is a reference to Luke 8:50. As a kid I would quote those few words and their citation like crazy: “Don’t be afraid, just believe. Luke eight fifty.”
