I gaze upon the heavens which you made,
Which by your gentle fingers were designed –
The moon and stars, your artwork there displayed –
And wonder I that you would pay us mind.
Yet there they are, reflections of your love,
The lesser lights you made to rule the night –
They hang and shine amidst the dark above
That even after dusk we may have sight.
Then even more, you sent to Earth for us
A light that shines far brighter than the sun,
In sin’s dark shadow mercy glorious,
Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
Thus, when I view your handiwork on high,
I see your Love for such a wretch as I.
