Now Balaam’s heart was set against the Lord As rode he to King Balak on his ass, So God sent an angel with a drawn sword To slay the seer should he try to pass. Though Balaam saw him not,
The King of Moab sent with heavy purse
For Balaam, a pagan prophet of Hell
From heaven is the wrath of God revealed; Against the depths of men’s ungodliness, Against the rank unrighteous fruits they yield, Against the way their hearts the truth suppress. For all that may be known of God is plain –
Our birth was not of Gentiles but of Jews,
Yet still we know that none is justified
In days that wear prosperity be glad –
Be happy through those times you see as good;
I gaze upon the heavens which you made, Which by your gentle fingers were designed – The moon and stars, your artwork there displayed – And wonder I that you would pay us mind. Yet there they are, reflections of
To whom shall we our awesome God compare?
Is there another like Him in the land?
My God, my God, must you forsake my days,
When countless nights have heard me weep your name?
